چکیده

Leaded pol analyses are used in sugar factories as an estimation of sucrose for factory control purposes and for cane payment. Health and environmental concerns associated with the use of lead for sample clarification has put pressure on the use of this method. Near infrared (NIR) polarimetry has been investigated as an alternative worldwide and the South African sugar industry has decided to replace the leaded pol analysis with NIR polarimetry for factory control purposes. The new method uses a NIR light source which does not require the test solution to be of low colour. Lead clarification can therefore be replaced by a simple filtration step to remove solution turbidity. Suitability of the use of NIR polarimetry by the Cane Testing Service (CTS) was established using a number of comparisons between CTS centres and the SMRI during the 2004/05 season. Previous comparisons were done only at the SMRI. Results are presented and discussed together with the change in method, equipment and other considerations.

Near infrared polarimetry of a sample of blazars\*

Polarization variability is one of the most ubiquitous characteristic of blazars. Near infrared (NIR) polarization measurements of blazars are not common, contrary to the optical ones. Nonetheless, the NIR regime can be essential to understand correlated or non-correlated behaviour between the optical and radio energy ranges. In this work, we report on NIR polarimetry measurements of a sample o...

First Light of the Near-infrared Narrow-band Tunable Birefringent Filter at Big Bear Solar Observatory

We discuss a near-infrared (NIR) narrow-band tunable birefringent filter system newly developed by the Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO). This is one of the first narrow-bandpass NIR filter systems working at 1.56 μm which is used for the observation of the deepest solar photosphere. Four stages of calcite were used to obtain a bandpass of 2.5 Å along with a free spectral range (FSR) of 40 Å. S...

Carbon Nanotubes as Near Infrared Radiation (NIR) Molecules for Cancer treatment

Introduction: The photo-thermal therapy by nanoparticles has been recently known as an efficient strategy for the cancer treatment. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been extensively studied in biomedical application due to the easy uptake and high permeability in the cells, biocompatibility in biological environments and also their unique electrical, thermal properties. They genera...

Prediction of Freshness Quality and Phosphate Residue of White Shrimp Products Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

Background: The manufacturing of frozen shrimp is an important industry for the economy of Thailand. The objective of this study was to use Near-Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy to determine the freshness quality, including Total Volatile Basic Nitrogen (TVB-N) and Water Holding Capacity (WHC) of white shrimp (whole and chopped shrimp) and phosphate residues of shrimp. Methods: Sixty white shrimp ...

Optical and NIR monitoring of the GRB 020405 afterglow

Optical and near-infrared (NIR) observations of GRB020405 started about 1 day after the GRB and extended over ∼70 days. Pho-tometry shows that the early decay is consistent with a single power law of index α = 1.54±0.06 in all bands. The late epoch light curves, sampled with HST and VLT, exhibit a plateau or slight rebrightening around 10-20 days after the GRB. This bump can be modeled with a S...
